Dual Language Program

At South Meadows Middle School, we offer the Dual Language Program (DLP) in grades 7 and 8. Elementary DLP students continue their bilingual journey by receiving instruction in both English and Spanish throughout the school day. Since its launch in 2010, our goal is to develop bilingual and bicultural students who can read, write, speak, and understand both English and Spanish.

What subjects are taught in Spanish?

At South Meadows middle school, DLP students will receive the following subjects in Spanish:

  • Spanish Language Arts (SLA)

  • Science

  • Social Studies (8th Grade Only)

  • Math (7th Grade Only) Other subjects are taught in English.

Bilingual Pathway Recognition

At the end of eighth grade, DLP students who demonstrate growth in the domains of writing and speaking will receive a medal and certificate as recognition that they are on the path to bilingualism.

Students who continue in the DLP through high school may earn the State Seal of Biliteracy, which is recognized on their diplomas and can open college and career opportunities.

Enrollment & Exit Process

Students enrolled in DLP and Spanish literacy programs in elementary school are automatically enrolled in the DLP program in secondary school.

Newly arrived Spanish-speaking students from other countries also have access to the DLP program if they wish. Families wishing to enroll a student who has not received instruction in a DLP program but writes and reads in Spanish will be assessed to determine if they would be successful in the program at this level. Although we recommend that families commit to a PK-12 pathway, we recognize that there are situations that may require a student to be removed from the program. To initiate this exit process, they will need to meet with the school principal.
